"What does the energy transition end-state look like? We’re going to see a lot more integration and convergence across technologies and industries – we’ll be thinking less in terms of distinct industries – gas, electricity, water - and more about the entire system, interdependencies, and circularity."

Barrister – understanding perspectives, motivations and navigating to clarity

In detail:

An economist by training, Phil spent time after university in Alberta looking at the liberalisation of its power market. On his return to the UK, he completed an MSc in Russian and East European Studies assessing how the restructuring of the Russian electricity industry was affecting the region’s economy. He then joined a consultancy as an analyst creating models based on deep research into energy markets and transactions. In 2004, Phil and two friends set up Redpoint Energy, working, and then merging with Baringa to form our energy advisory team in 2012.

Phil compares his role with that of a surveyor when buying a house. But instead of houses, Phil helps investors, developers, lenders, utilities providers and governments to assess power stations and the energy market. He covers many questions: What is the geopolitical environment like? How well is the asset performing today, and how will that change into the future? Is the market attractive for investment? Phil and his team give our clients the information they need to make decisions on investing in, or divesting from, specific energy assets and businesses. Beyond market advisory, Phil helps clients with commercial advisory too – how can transactions be structured and completed to be economically viable?

The insight and reports that Phil and his team produce carry weight in the market; they build them using models they’ve refined over decades, covering thousands of variables and huge data sources. He feels personal responsibility to give actionable, independent information that clients and the industry can rely on. To deliver this, Phil focuses on transparency and collaboration within an industry ecosystem that includes a huge range of stakeholders. Phil and his team talk to people from every corner of the industry, sourcing research and gathering feedback. This exhaustive approach, and the extra insights they garner from it, help them to
offer unique insights and opinions that the market values.

He’s hugely proud of the team he’s built, and the opportunity it gives him to mentor younger colleagues – something he missed out on by starting his business in his early 20s. Away from work, Phil watches his sons play rugby and cricket, and is a keen sea fisherman off the coast of Devon. Closer to home, he runs a hog roast business hosting barbecues at local charity events.
