Baringa Partners are delighted to see that Vattenfall has entered into an agreement regarding the sale of a 49.5% stake in Hollandse Kust Zuid offshore wind farm to BASF, one of world's largest chemical producers.

The project is expected to become fully operational in 2023, and will be the largest offshore wind farm in the world with 140 wind turbines and a total installed capacity of 1.5 Gigawatt.

This transaction is defining a unique milestone in the energy sector: not only is the Hollandse Kust Zuid wind farm the first fully merchant offshore wind farm in the world, but equally it is also the first time a large industrial offtaker is taking a significant equity share in a large renewable generation asset.

Supporting our client Vattenfall in the realisation of this disinvestment through our work as Sell Side Market Advisers is a proud achievement for Baringa. We also extend our congratulations to BASF on this transaction, helping to fulfil its ambitious net-zero targets in 2050.

Baringa’s role on supporting the sale has included:

  • the provision of continuous market advice
  • price projections for the Dutch power market
  • and the creation of a comprehensive sell-side market report.

Dr. Marc Daube, a leading Power Market expert at Baringa Partners said: “We are extremely proud to have assisted Vattenfall in the successful partial divestment of Hollandse Kust Zuid offshore wind farm, and congratulate BASF on this landmark transaction."

Dr. Simon Tywuschik, Baringa Partners added: “It is truly amazing to see how both the energy sector and large energy users are jointly promoting the energy transaction and helping to decarbonize our industries. I’m expecting this transaction will set an example for more of this kind to follow.”
