Ensuring climate-related compliance and building a lasting impact for government agencies
1 March 2025
How do government agencies navigate mandatory climate regulations today and future-proof for tomorrow?
As mandatory climate-related financial disclosures come into effect, government agencies face growing pressure to both ensure compliance and strengthen in-house expertise and capabilities. However, many agencies lack the structured training and expertise needed to produce comprehensive disclosures that meet evolving regulatory expectations.
We were asked to partner with a government agency overseeing $2 billion in assets to create a specialised training program. This initiative was designed to equip teams across 30 agencies – with a combined asset value of $25 billion - with the capability to meet imminent disclosure requirements.
Creating a single source of truth
The training program was designed to support agencies—regardless of their prior expertise—in developing high-quality, end-to-end climate-related financial disclosures. Our approach focused on:
- Tailoring training for targeted audiences – Reworking the training plan to ensure accessibility for both leadership and practitioners, resulting in the development of 10 targeted training modules.
- Providing clear, structured guidance – Creating a step-by-step roadmap covering the entire disclosure process, from foundational concepts to final reporting.
- Embedding broader capability uplift – Strengthening knowledge in key supporting areas, such as carbon accounting, to ensure long-term sustainability of reporting practices.
- Enhancing engagement and effectiveness – Leveraging our expertise to design an approach that maximises learner engagement and retention.
Laying the foundation for the future
The result was a best-practice training framework that became the agency’s single source of truth for climate disclosures. The initiative received strong endorsement from the executive team, recognising the depth, coverage, and critical importance of the content. By building internal expertise, the agency is now positioned to take the lead in climate-related financial disclosures, setting a new standard for other public sector organisations.
