In March 2022, Baringa opened an office in Rotterdam with just two team members. Now with an enthusiastic team of nine experts, we work with investors, project developers, network companies, sector organisations and governments on the challenges of the energy transition. We work closely with our 450 energy experts in Baringa globally.

Impact that lasts

In our first two years in the Netherlands we have collaborated on a large number of challenging projects including the following highlights:

  • We worked for Energy Innovation NL to develop a roadmap for the creation of a reference architecture for the energy infrastructure in the Netherlands. A reference architecture shows how people, processes and technology work together in a digitalised energy sector. We gave an overview of important energy innovations, analysed current reference architectures, and determined how to best develop such a reference architecture.
  • For Synergrid, the Belgian sector organization of grid operators, we modeled the impact of the expected increase in electric vehicles on the power grid. We investigated what investments are needed to deal with the extra load and how smart charging can help. We showed the value of action, and the cost of inaction. The result is a model that Synergrid can continue to use for the longer term.
  • We provided advice to the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate on financing options for new nuclear power plants. Case studies were carried out for Finland, Poland, France and the United Kingdom; four European countries where nuclear power plants have recently been built, new construction programs have been started or are being prepared. This research helps make choices for sharing and managing financial risks between the government and market parties.
  • Our team produces market reports on price developments within the electricity sector and advises on transactions. Developers of energy parks, storage systems and financiers from the energy sector are amongst the clients.
  • We successfully supported one of the first financing projects for batteries in continental Europe. More than 100 MW of capacity has recently become operational. We now support this developer with marketing the storage capacity and possible new projects.

A bright future

In its first two years in the Netherlands, Baringa has worked with approximately 20 public and private sector clients within the total energy value chain, ranging from grid operators, the national government, energy companies and project developers.

With our knowledge and experience, we make a valuable contribution to the ongoing dialogue on the energy transition in the Netherlands. This includes the congested power grid and how smarter handling of connections can unlock more capacity. We look forward to working on many more energy transition projects over the coming years, with our growing team of experts.
