Electricity network operator: securing critical national infrastructure with hybrid defences
30 April 2025
How do you stay ahead of evolving cyber and physical risks?
With global security risks escalating, governments are increasingly focused on safeguarding critical national infrastructure – the lifelines of modern society, like power and water. Our client, a major electricity transmission operator, is at the heart of this effort. Any disruption to their network could have far-reaching consequences, affecting millions and, in the worst-case scenario, putting lives in danger.
Maintaining cyber security through a period of change
In the wake of organisational restructuring, our client faced a critical challenge: maintaining rock-solid security during a period of transition. With a unique blend of cyber expertise, deep regulatory knowledge and a pioneering approach spanning cyber and physical risks, we stepped in to help.
We didn’t just advise – we built. From the ground up, we designed and launched a cyber security function – designing the operating model, supporting recruitment and embedding skills to fast-track self-sufficiency. At the same time, we co-developed a forward-thinking security strategy, ensuring compliance with baseline industry regulations while charting a clear path to enhanced-level security within the next three years.
Breaking new ground with a hybrid security approach
In today’s high-risk environment, traditional security measures no longer cut it. Basic security standards for sites, often driven solely by considerations for safety or theft, for example, aren’t enough to deter sophisticated threats. To gain real insight, we went beyond the boardroom, pulling on personal protective equipment, travelling to remote sites and scrutinising vulnerabilities first hand.
The result? A game-changing hybrid security strategy that blends improved cyber defences with upgraded physical security, pushing boundaries in the industry. Our approach hasn’t gone unnoticed. The government’s cyber security task group invited us to present our pioneering work to leading energy companies in an exclusive closed session.
Securing multi-million-pound investment for the future
Our ambitious strategy is already delivering results. The energy regulator has given the green light to a £20 million investment in enhanced security measures – an endorsement of both our vision and plans for implementation. Now, as we move into delivery, we are working side by side with our client to turn strategy into reality, proving our value as a trusted partner at every stage of their security evolution.
This isn’t just about protecting infrastructure. It’s about safeguarding the foundations of our connected world.
"Baringa's high-performing teams, collaborative approach, and deep industry and cyber expertise were essential in addressing our biggest challenges. Their full ownership of engagements led to significant improvements in our security posture and played a key role in enhancing our capabilities and growing our teams."
