Asset resilience within the US electricity grid
6 August 2025
The United States’ electricity grid faces an array of extreme weather hazards that pose substantial and growing risks to the reliability and security of its energy infrastructure. Electric utilities are faced with competing asset needs, having to determine the most valuable capital investments across a diverse portfolio and uncertain future extreme weather risk.
This webinar outlines Baringa’s Asset Resilience framework for forecasting resilience risk in order to inform asset investment valuation and prioritize portfolios. Its purpose is not to prescribe specific adaptation strategies for any jurisdiction or hazard, but rather to give decision makers a framework to evaluate the effectiveness of different investments given a utility’s exposure to specific types of extreme weather.
Baringa's Asset Resilience framework is a 5-step process that leverages downscaled climate projections to derive asset-level risk in dollars. This risk assessment will give utilities and decision makers the data to accurately value the cost effectiveness of investments and prioritize them based on value for cost. While this webinar is developed to help State Energy Offices understand how to evaluate resilience investments in regard to 40101(d) applications, utilities can directly implement this framework given their ownership of the assets and direct exposure to extreme weather risk.
