Eliminating the FUD

In a brazenly high-levelled game of switcheroo Vladimir Putin’s appointed successor as Russian president, Dimitri Medvedev, has announced who his chosen Prime Minister will be. None other than Mr Putin himself. It seems that come next March, when the change in government officially takes place, it will be ‘business as usual’ for the Russians.

For Western commentators, that phrase is particularly apt. With so-called ‘Putinisation’ showing no sign of slowing down, it is becoming harder and harder to spot where the Russian political elite stops and its business leaders start. Mr Medvedev is a prime example: when not acting as premier-elect, his day job is chairman of the nationalised Russian gas giant, Gazprom.
