When I joined Baringa Partners, it was already a well known and respected company with an impressive client portfolio. The impression I got from the interview process - friendly, strong respect for the individual and extremely professional - was exactly what I experienced in the first few months after joining.
Fortunately, I never looked back – moving from corporate to consultancy was a big step but I was made to feel very welcome and was given assignments that allowed me to start contributing very quickly, even if the learning curve was steep!
My first two assignments were both with power companies. I had previously worked in the Oil industry so I learnt a lot in these first roles - from how generation portfolios are managed right through to billing processes for domestic customers. I also had a great time in Dublin! I then worked with one of the Oil Majors to help identify and manage price exposures in their European businesses. After some initial research, we submitted a proposal to introduce a new process to change to the customer pricing mechanism and to create of a new hedging programme. It was extremely successful, so much so that other BP groups wanted us to do the same for them. Demand was more than we could handle.
After spending a short period with one of our Dutch clients integrating a new generation asset into their existing systems environment, I now work in the Data Readiness area of a large business transformation project with one of the UK’s integrated power companies. It is a complex and challenging role, not least as the team I work with is very diverse but I have settled in well and I am learning a lot. This is only one half of my double life though – I currently work 4 days per week and spend every spare moment with my 15 month old son. The last few months were bizarre – 4 days ‘suited and booted’, while weekends and my day off were spent crawling around the house on my hands and knees playing peek-a-boo!
